Cristiano Ronaldo scored the third goal in Juventus’ 3-1 win over Sassuolo on Sunday and with that he became the joint-highest scorer for club and country in the history of the game.
With 759 career goals, Ronaldo equalled Josef Bican, the Austrian-Czech striker who played between 1931 and 1955.
Bican played for clubs including Rapid Vienna, Slavia Prague and Dynamo Prague in the 1930s, 40s and early 50s, representing Austria and Czechoslovakia at international level.
Ronaldo’s strikes have of course come for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juve, while he is Portugal’s all-time leading scorer with 101 goals for his country.
In the first week of the year, the Portuguese icon edged past former Brazilian great Pele’s record of 757 official goals. Ronaldo’s long-time rival Lionel Messi is at the fifth spot.
Juventus striker failed to score in their 3-1 victory over AC Milan the last time out but did not disappoint against visiting Sassuolo at the Allianz Stadium.
The hard fought goal by the 35 year old Cristiano Ronaldo against Sassuolo ensured juventus moved to the fourth spot on serie A standings after AC milan , Inter and Roma football clubs.
The Portuguese star will be desperate to become football’s outright top goalscorer when Juventus host Genoa on Wednesday night in the Coppa Italia
Reacting to his weekend performance, the ex-Real Madrid star said he was delighted to have made a contribution in Juve carting home all the three points.
“Another 3 very important points! Happy to have made my contribution,” he posted on his Instagram page.
